The Intensive Course in Obstetric Emergencies (ICOE) is a simulation and skills-based course designed by the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM) since 2014. The course is dedicated to training doctors and midwives in confidently managing maternity emergencies both locally and regionally.
The typical two-day course consists of 12 short lectures and 8 practical breakout sessions using simulation models of various fidelity. It covers a range of emergencies such as eclampsia, shoulder dystocia and postpartum hemorrhage, striving to teach both technical and non-technical skills, with and emphasis on multi-professional team management. Participants will be able to gain valuable knowledge and skills that will assist them in their clinical duty.
ICOE’s high standards are upheld by our experienced trainers who endevour to teach consistently based on the Handbook in Obstetric Emergencies. The handbook is included in the participants’ course fees and serve as a treasured source of up-t0-date reference.
As we continuously seek out new passionate trainers, ICOE offers a one-day Train the Trainers Course to participants who have previously attended ICOE and are interested in joining the team.
Having to have adapted and evolved during this Covid-19 pandemic we have just organised a successful first Virtual ICOE for doctors and midwives in December 2020 which was widely received locally and regionally.
The ICOE team believes that being equipped with up to date evidences and advances is the way forward to brave this pandemic and hence is currently working tirelessly to devise a virtual ICOE certification course, slated to launch by March – April 2021.
